Light Walking

February 17, 2006

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day” (Genesis 1:1-5, NASB).

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105 KJV).

“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life’ ” (John 8:12, NASB).

“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and {yet} walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:1-7, NASB).

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5, 6 NASB).

Despite having been recently released from his addiction to cocaine, a friend of mine nevertheless succomed to temptation last week and used again. He had veered from the narrow way that leads to life onto the wide way that leads to destruction, walking in the darkness of his sin rather than in the light of God’s Word.

His spiritual eyesight having thereby already been darkened, he then proceeded further down the wrong path by trying to figure out how to lie to his girlfriend about his relapse.

When he asked me what I thought he should do, I prayed to the Holy Spirit for guidance in counselling him, and then I deflected his eyes from me towards the living Word of God, Who is the Light of the world, by asking him: “What do you think Jesus would advise you to do?”.

He replied, “Jesus would advise me to tell her the truth, so that is what I shall do”.

Voila! My friend was back on that good old narrow way that leads to life again, walking in the light of God’s Word!

Herein we have a wonderful real-world illustration of an effectual (and, therefore, victorious) application of the psalmist’s admonition to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5, 6 NASB).

And herein we have an illustration of the spiritual meaning of the name of my blog, which name is: “Light Walk“.
